The essays and case-studies collected here were written during the taught phase of my doctoral studies between 2018 and 2022.

​They capture the development of my thinking as I grapple with questions of race, psychotherapy, coloniality, Black existence, knowledge production, and professional formation within white-dominated educational and therapeutic institutions. 

They should not be read as definitive statements of my current position.

Rather, they represent moments in an intellectual journey that eventually culminated in my doctoral research,

From Behind the Veil.: Unveiling the Experiences of Black British-Born Males of African Heritage Navigating Psychotherapy Training Within a White-Dominated Culture 

and the development of my Africana Critical Race Framework (ACRF). 

At the time of writing, many of the ideas that would later become central to my doctoral work were still emerging.

Readers will encounter early engagements with coloniality, the White Racial Frame (Feagin, 2006; 2020), Ubuntu, Black Africana existential thought, institutional racism, resistance, de-humanisation, and questions concerning what it means to be Black within spaces that frequently assume Euro-American experiences to be universal.

Some positions remain central to my thinking today; others have evolved considerably through subsequent study, research, and lived experience. 

I have chosen to publish these essays and case-studies because intellectual development is rarely linear. Ideas emerge through questioning, uncertainty, challenge, critique, and revision.

Rather than presenting only the final destination, these essays and case-studies reveal something of the journey itself. The document the gradual movement from student, to researcher, to the development of an original theoretical framework. 

Where appropriate, I have made minor editorial revisions to improve readability, grammar, and presentation. However, I have deliberately resisted rewriting the essays from the perspective of my later work.

They remain faithful to the thinking, questions, and concerns that occupied me at the time they were written. 

They also reflect the intellectual boundaries of the educational environment in which they were produced, where certain traditions of knowledge were privileged while others remained absent or marginalised.

In this sense, these essays and case-studies reveal not only the development of my thinking, but also the limitations imposed by the Colonial Matrix of Power that shaped what could be seen, questioned, and imagined.
